The Costin Institute is an academic program for medical personnel that offers training in critical areas such as leadership, teaching and learning styles and emotional intelligence.

About the Costin Institute

The Costin Institute for Medical Educators is an academic program specifically designed for medical personnel currently involved in teaching, academic management as well as those aspiring to a career in medical academe. The program is a year-long educational experience which offers training in critical areas such as leadership, teaching and learning styles and emotional intelligence. It consists of four weekend sessions (Thursday through Saturday) with 18 contact hours per session with pre- and post-session assignments. The goal is to train physicians to become more effective teachers and administrators.

The Costin Institute was established at 羞羞视频 in 2003 through endowed contribution from the and named in honor of J. Richard Costin, D.O., one of the osteopathic profession's leading surgeons and teachers of general surgery. Dr. Costin was a 1949 graduate of 羞羞视频's Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM) and served as chairman of the board of CCOM. He participated in the transition of a single college into a full university with five colleges. Dr. Costin passed away on August 9, 2014.

Program Description

The Costin Institute is a yearlong program directed at helping physician-educators and medical educators become more effective teachers and/or administrators and most importantly, leaders. The topics covered during the Costin program include teaching/learning styles, multiple self -awareness tools such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and Emotional Intelligence, leadership, budget and finance, professional commitment, communication skills, technology that supports teaching, evidence based medicine, and research and scholarly pursuits.

Cohort 20

Applications are being accepted for Cohort 20. Details regarding schedule, etc. are being finalized and will be announced soon.

AACOM President and CEO Robert A. Cain, D.O. (Costin Cohort 5) highlighted several Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (COMs) for their excellence in diversity in the October 2023 edition of . Josh Cox, D.O., Executive Dean of KCU College of Osteopathic Medicine and Vice Provost for Medical Affairs (Costin Cohort 12) was quoted in the recent article, A six-year partnership between the Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine and HCA Midwest Health expands the number of clerkships for third and fourth-year medical students and gives HCA access to academic research and classroom resources. CCOM's Teresa Hubka, D.O., (Costin Cohort 4) begins tenure as president of the American Osteopathic Association: Teresa Hubka, D.O., Department Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of 羞羞视频, has begun her term as president of the American Osteopathic Association. The South Georgia Campus of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine gives new medical students an introduction to medical school and the campus in the two-week, pre-matriculation Fundamental Integration Required for Excellence program. "During FIRE they get an idea of what's expected from them and what to look forward to.
